Goondiwindi Mural: A Tapestry of Community Spirit
Location: Foodworks Cnr Bowen and Herbert Streets Goondiwindi
Queensland artist Benjamin Werner collaborated with the vibrant LaneScape Festival Goondiwindi team to bring forth a mural that transcends mere paint on walls, the design unfolded embracing Benjamin’s iconic burst of coloured lights.
In a harmonious blend of talent, ages, and abilities, the local community worked hand in hand with the artists. This inclusive process not only enriched the mural but also became a focal point for the community. Witnessing the progress became a shared experience, drawing visitors back over the two-week creation period.
The masterpiece unfolded under the skilled hands of Benjamin Werner, Yannick Blattner and assistant artist on this project Meghan Paker-Webb.
Benjamin and Yannick when painting murals together are collectively known as ALL CITY WALLS. This dynamic duo, with a track record that includes collaborations with industry giants like Marvel, Disney and the Gallery of Modern Art, invested their expertise into the mural.
As the mural emerged, Goondiwindi embraced the artists as family. Special gratitude extends to Heather, Angus, Kate, Pete, the LaneScape team, volunteers, and the Goondiwindi Regional Council for their unwavering support.
Workshops brought together diverse groups, from local artists and schoolchildren, aged care to individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. The mural thus became a collaborative effort, weaving the threads of local identity into its vibrant fabric.
The mural, a living canvas, breathes with the essence of local wildlife. From the elegant egret in mating plumage to native fish, yabbies, and a Queensland turtle, each element tells a local story. The design, strategically set as a focal point in the arts trail, exposes the original building’s architectural brick facade while dispersing orbs of light into the atmosphere.
Officially unveiled at the 2023 LaneScape Festival, the mural stands as a testament to the power of collaborative art, uniting a community under the umbrella of creativity and shared expression.
