Members of the Goondiwindi RSL Sub Branch, met with author, Deborah Wheeler, out at the Goondiwindi Cemetery, to show her the headstones they have constructed over several years, for Veterans whose graves needed them. Russell Billsborough designed and crafted the mould for the headstones, and from there it has been an ongoing project, as in the process there have been a number of unmarked graves found as well. Many donations from the community helped to make this project successful.
Deborah Wheeler is an historian, researcher, writer, publisher and film maker from Warwick. She has taken on military history focusing currently on those Service men and women who served in WW1 from around the Southern Downs District, with the support of Councils and RSL Sub Branches.
Deborah, is looking to further enhance the work on the military history of the Goondiwindi Shire, with help from the local community groups, such as the Goondiwindi Regional Council, Goondiwindi RSL Sub Branch and Care Goondiwindi, to build on what they already have. This story will also be in the Goondiwindi Argus, describing how Deborah is going to go about this amazing tribute to our Veterans.
Deborah started her research, by talking with Goondiwindi RSL Sub Branch Members to gain background information about those graves belonging to our Service men and women โ a very good beginning for some wonderful stories.
