Following the success of Opera Queensland’s rendition of “Are You Lonesome Tonight”, Opera Queensland took a deep dive into the Queensland songbook to celebrate some of Australia’s most iconic artists. The result is the phenomenal production called “Lady Sings the Maroons”.
The production is a mixtape for a road trip from Brisbane to Cunnamulla, Mount Isa to Cairns, featuring songs from The Saints, Gladys Moncrieff, Savage Garden, Harold Blair, and more. “Lady Sings the Maroons” tells the story of the art of making a great song and the artists who write them. With the exceptional voices of Jess Hitchcock, Irena Lysiuk, and Marcus Corowa, the production has been much anticipated and highly sought after.
The tour of “Lady Sings the Maroons” started in May 2023 and is planned to visit various cities across the state, including the Festival of Outback Opera. The event hosted by the Goondiwindi Regional Council featured the production where approximately 300 people attended. The councillors acted as ushers, ticket sellers, servers of food, and ran the bar service. All the money raised from the event was donated to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a project delivered by United Way Australia in partnership with Goondiwindi Regional Council and Care Goondiwindi. It brings the magic of a library right into the home of a child with a gift of a book every month before school begins. The goal is to put a book in the hands of a child and let them open a new world for themselves.
The performance of “Lady Sings the Maroons” was met with rapturous applause and the crowd was delighted to hear the tune of “Goondiwindi Moon”. The valuable contribution of those who attended made a tangible difference to a child’s future. It was an amazing performance and a truly worthwhile cause.
In summation, “Lady Sings the Maroons” is an excellent production that celebrates some of Australia’s most famous artists. With exceptional voices and a captivating story, it’s no wonder this production is highly sought after. Additionally, the commitment of the Goondiwindi Regional Council to supporting Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a noble cause that is making a tremendous difference in the lives of children. Everyone should support initiatives like this that bring education and imagination to children who may not have had access to it otherwise.

“This program is one of the most important ways I know to improve the educational opportunities for children. Every child has a dream and the seeds of these dreams are often found in books. My Imagination Library aims to inspire children and help turn their dreams into the promise of a bright future.” Dolly Parton
