Lew Verny’s Speech from the R100 Event:
In 1921, four Rotary Clubs were created in Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington and Sydney. From there, Rotary and Rotaract clubs were created everywhere across Australia and NZ. We are all sharing a centenary in 2021, coming together and creating a common legacy, and tonight, we celebrate that in Goondiwindi.
The R100 Baton Relay was launched by the Governor General in Canberra on the 10th July 2020.
At the launch, he described Rotary as an organisation that dreams big, achieves much and makes an outstanding contribution to society. He said Rotarians live and breathe community. They are dependable, they are selfless, and they want to make the world a better place.
The theme for the baton relay is ‘Celebrating our past, embrace our future – We are Rotary’. It is planned to visit every Rotary Club, and be shared and celebrated by Rotarians and communities. Today, it has been carried by our service partners such as Lions and Days For Girls, community representatives such as our Citizen of the Year, and GRCouncillors, and shared with our local paramedics, also celebrating 100 years of service to our town. It has travelled up to the Cultural Centre in the iconic Bozo Bus !
I will now ask our most experienced Rotarian Mr Bruce Waller and wife Jan and to present the Baton to President Lachie, Mayor Lawrence and PDG Harry.
