Last week, Care Goondiwindi & Tie up the Black Dog presented part 1 of the โGoondiwindi Mental Health Seriesโ and welcomed former NRL star Darius Boyd for an evening of inspiration and education. Boyd, a true advocate for mental health, opened up about his personal journey through depression and anxiety, aiming to reveal how to live and deal with mental illness.
Darius, who emerged from a troubled background, used football as an escape from reality. However, he soon realised that he needed to confront his own mental health issues and turned his back on football to focus on his well-being. Boyd checked into a mental health facility with the aim of getting his life back on track.
Since then, Darius has become a vocal ambassador for mental health issues and a strong advocate for menโs health. He uses his platform to educate, inspire, and raise awareness about mental health. Recently, Boyd released his book, ‘Battling the Blues,’ which depicts his honest and inspiring journey as an NRL champion fighting to conquer his demons and live a better life.
During his visit to Goondiwindi, Darius conducted an evening presentation at the Goondiwindi Cinema & Theatre. The event, free included a complimentary light dinner. Attendees had the opportunity to hear Boyd speak about his experiences and learn valuable lessons about mental health.
Boyd also visited St Mary’s School and participated in football training sessions with players from the U6โs-U16 and open grades. He took the time to chat with the Boars about mental health, emphasising the importance of seeking help and breaking down stigmas surrounding mental health.
The ‘Goondiwindi Mental Health Series’ aims to bring awareness and support to mental health in the community. Upcoming events include visits from Samuel Johnson and Aaron Williams in October 2023 for their “Life Stuff” talks. Jessica Rowe March 2024.
Darius Boyd’s journey in the NRL is highly commendable. He fulfilled his childhood dream of playing for the Brisbane Broncos, winning a premiership with the club at just 18 years old. Boyd later became Broncos captain 11 years later and also won the 2010 NRL Grand Final with the Dragons. His extensive career includes 28 State of Origin appearances for Queensland and 23 Test matches for Australia.
However, Darius achievements on the field do not reveal the depth of his personal journey. Off the field, he stands as a true advocate for mental health, using his platform to share his struggles with depression and anxiety. Through his public speaking engagements, Boyd offers insights from his private journal, reflecting on his darkest moments and the ways he manages his mental health.
Darius’ powerful message is one of hope and resilience. He encourages those experiencing tough times to seek help and aims to break down stigmas surrounding mental health. His willingness to share his story demonstrates the strength required to overcome adversity and live a fulfilling life.
The Goondiwindi community has been blessed to have Darius Boyd share his journey and inspire others to prioritise their mental well-being. The ‘Goondiwindi Mental Health Series’ continues to provide invaluable resources and support to the local community, ensuring that mental health remains a priority.Darius Boyd Shares Inspiring Journey of Mental Health at Goondiwindi
