Last weekend, the Inglewood Roosters hosted their Old Boys Day, and the community came out in full force to support the event. However, this year was extra special as the Millmerran Rams joined in for the first-ever Russell Klein Memorial Match.
The match was a thrilling display of skill and sportsmanship, and everyone involved, from the players to the referees, should be commended for providing pure entertainment. Mervy Morris, who dusted off his whistle to referee the game, ensured fair play and added to the excitement.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of many individuals, the event was a resounding success. Special recognition goes to Shane Hooper, Dolly Bennett, and Penny Dawson for their outstanding organisational skills. Their hard work paid off, as they managed to raise approximately $8500 through the auction of jerseys and NRL tickets donated by Tom Menogue.
The day was made even more meaningful by the presence of the Klein family, who graciously allowed the event to be held in memory of Russ, and traveled to support the day. Their support and presence were deeply appreciated by all.
It is also important to acknowledge the sponsors who generously supported the event. Johnstone Concrete and Quarries, Hearneyโs Earthmoving, Bennett Earthmoving Maintenance, Dutchyโs Concreting and Carpentry, Rielly Earthmoving, Paul & Wendy Greentree, and Nupeak Gym all played a crucial role in making the day a success. Their support is greatly appreciated by the Inglewood Roosters and the entire community.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Russell Klein Shield match, which ended in a draw. Both teams, the Roosters and Rams, showcased their skills, making it an exciting and closely fought contest. The spirit of friendly competition was evident throughout the game, with plenty of laughs and a bit of fun for everyone present.
The women’s match between the Roosters and the Gremlins was equally exciting. The Roosters emerged victorious with a score of 8-2, displaying their expertise on the field and proving their mettle.
In the men’s match, the Roosters dominated the Gremlins, securing a commanding victory with a score of 58-12. The team’s remarkable performance left the spectators in awe and showcased the hard work and dedication put in by the players.
Overall, Old Boys Day proved to be a fantastic occasion, celebrating the community spirit and love for rugby league. The Inglewood Roosters’ commitment to bringing people together through sports is truly commendable, and we eagerly look forward to next year’s event for a rematch and more memorable moments.
