The Pittsworth Men’s Shed is embarking on a long and exciting journey to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer. Their first stop on this important mission was Goondiwindi, where they received support from the local community.
On the 2nd of August 2023, the Pittsworth Men’s Shed set off on their trip to Yarrawonga, Victoria. Their plan is to man a raft that they have built themselves, starting from Yarrawonga and making their way to Swan Hill. This unique endeavor aims to raise funds for the “It’s A Bloke Thing” foundation, a charity dedicated to prostate cancer research and awareness.
The cause hits close to home for the Pittsworth Men’s Shed as they recently lost a member to prostate cancer. Determined to make a difference, they have taken on this long-term project with great enthusiasm and excitement.
To spread the word about prostate cancer and raise awareness, Ruth Logan, the Education Program Facilitator, joined the Pittsworth Men’s Shed on their journey. With a rural upbringing and personal experience with family members diagnosed with prostate cancer, Ruth is passionate about spreading the prostate health message to the wider community.
Ruth, who has extensive experience working as an Allied Health Practitioner and managing Corporate Health programs, aims to translate medical science and jargon into everyday language that resonates with men. Her goal is to empower men to take responsibility for managing their health, particularly their prostate health.
The Goondiwindi community warmly welcomed the Pittsworth Men’s Shed and their cause. The Gundy Men’s Shed, aware of the upcoming “It’s A Bloke Thing” prostate cancer roadshow, approached the Pittsworth Men’s Shed to offer their support. They arranged a venue at the Water Park and provided lunch for the members of the Pittsworth Men’s Shed during their stop in Goondiwindi.
The public was also invited to attend the event, with all donations going towards the “It’s A Bloke Thing” project. In solidarity with this valuable cause, the Gundy Men’s Shed generously donated $500 and Rotary Club Of Goondiwindi donated $200 to support the Pittsworth Men’s Shed and their efforts.
Following the visit to Goondiwindi, a follow-up visit by Ruth Logan has been scheduled for Tuesday, 19th September. Hosted by the Lions Club, this visit will continue to raise awareness about prostate cancer and the importance of early detection and proactive management.
The Pittsworth Men’s Shed, along with their dedicated supporters like the Gundy Men’s Shed and Ruth Logan, are making a significant impact in their mission to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer. Their journey is not just about the physical challenges they face but also about the message they are spreading to encourage men to take control of their health.
