The Goondiwindi RSL Sub Branch held a poignant and heartfelt Commemorative Service on Friday, August 18th, 2023, at the Cenotaph in the Goondiwindi Town Park. This solemn event, 11am service, was organised to pay tribute to the Australian and New Zealand veterans who bravely served during the Vietnam War, including the courageous souls who partook in the historic Battle of Long Tan.
The service was a sombre reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave servicemen and women who dedicated themselves to the call of duty during a challenging period in history. The emotional gathering was attended by veterans, community members, and dignitaries, all coming together to remember and honour those who served.
The Vietnam War was a conflict that deeply impacted countless lives, both on and off the battlefield. While some veterans returned home, many bore physical and emotional scars that continue to affect them to this day. The Commemorative Service underscored the importance of acknowledging and supporting the veterans who had been through such trials, highlighting that their sacrifices should never be forgotten.
Community support for the veterans was evident as residents of Goondiwindi and surrounding areas turned out to pay their respects. The Mayor, the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg AM, along with Councillor Phil OโShea, were also in attendance, emphasising the significance of this event to the local community.
As the wreaths were laid and the Last Post played its haunting melody, they stood in silent reflection, honouring the memory of those who served and expressing gratitude for their dedication and bravery. The words “LEST WE FORGET” echoed through the park, a powerful reminder of the duty to preserve the memory of those who have made sacrifices.
The Commemorative Service served as a poignant reminder that Vietnam Veterans Day is not just a date on the calendar but an opportunity to come together as a community and as a nation to remember and show gratitude for the service and sacrifices of those who have shaped history.
As the years go by, events like these continue to ensure that the legacy of Vietnam veterans lives on and that their stories and sacrifices are passed down through generations. The Goondiwindi RSL Sub Branch’s Commemorative Service was a touching tribute to the enduring spirit of these veterans, reminding us all to remember, honour, and appreciate their contributions.
